The Importance of the Colon to Good Health

The colon, also known as the large intestine or the bowel is a very important organ in its own right. In completing the digestive process it carries out a number of vital functions not least the absorption of water soluble nutrients and the synthesis of some vitamins. It is one of the major eliminatory organs responsible for the removal of food and other Large Intestinebodily wastes, as well as protecting the body from infection and disease.

When the Colon is clean and functioning normally we experience good health and well being. This is achieved with the help of billions of friendly bacteria which inhabit the colon. Poor eating habits, pollutants, certain drugs, stress, smoking or exposure to toxic substances can interfere with the delicate balance of our internal flora. When this happens the colon can become congested with stagnant wastes and as a result autointoxication or ‘self poisoning’ can occur.
